What goes into a garden

Everything we build in a garden

Pick one thing or have the whole garden done. Most of our jobs are a mix.

Paving and paths

Patios, clay paver and sandstone paths, stepping stones and edging.

Lawns

New turf on prepared, levelled ground, or artificial grass on a proper base.

Walls and levels

Retaining walls, raised beds, rendered planters and steps for sloping gardens.

Fencing

Closeboard and panel fencing on concrete or timber posts, and gates.

Decking

Composite and timber decks on a level sub-frame, with lighting set in.

Edging

Steel, stone, brick or timber edges that keep lawn out of the beds and paths sharp.

Sleepers and raised beds

Oak or concrete sleepers for raised beds, low retaining walls and steps.

Planting

Shrubs, perennials, grasses and trees chosen for the soil, the sun and how much care you want to give.

Features and lighting

Water features, pergolas, fire pits and seating, with low deck and wall lights wired in.

Case study

A full rebuild of a large sloping garden

One of our biggest jobs: a steep back garden turned into terraces you can actually use.

The garden fell away from the house and was mostly rough ground. We dug it out into levels, built block retaining walls and rendered them, then laid pale porcelain terraces linked by steps.

Up top, a composite deck runs along a frameless glass balustrade, cut round a mature tree and lit with low recessed lights. Two hot tubs were lifted in by crane over the house. Lower down there is a garden room, a striped lawn, and a buff clay paver path running under oak pergola frames with lavender either side.

Lawns, edges and planting

The soft side of a garden, built on the same proper base

Lawns, edges and beds are where a cheap garden job shows within a year. Here is what we do differently.

Lawns

Turf and artificial grass

Turf is only as flat as the soil under it. We strip the old lawn or weeds, rotovate, pick out stones and roots, then level and firm the ground and rake in a pre-turf fertiliser. The rolls go down with staggered joints, butted tight, and get rolled and watered in. Artificial grass needs a firmer base than people expect: a compacted sub-base, a sharp sand or grano dust layer and a membrane, fixed to a timber or steel edge so it never ripples. More on our artificial grass installation.

  • Staggered joints, rolled in
  • Seed if you prefer, same prep

Structure

Edging, sleepers and raised beds

Without a solid edge, grass creeps into the beds, gravel spills onto the lawn and paths lose their line. Edging goes in as steel (galvanised, or Corten that rusts to a warm brown on purpose), stone, brick or setts, or treated timber, with brick and stone set in concrete. Oak or concrete sleepers build raised beds, low retaining walls and simple steps. For anything holding back more than a knee-high bank, we would build a block retaining wall instead.

Finishing

Planting, water features and pergolas

We plant shrubs, perennials, grasses and trees picked for your soil and how much sun the garden gets, with evergreen structure so the beds are not bare in winter. Features get built in with the rest of the job, so the cables and pipes are laid before the paving goes down. We plan the layout with you on site, around anything worth keeping: a good tree, an old wall, a pond.

FAQs

Landscaping questions

How much does a full garden makeover cost?
It depends almost entirely on what goes in. A tidy-up with new turf and a small patio costs a fraction of a full rebuild with walls, decking and lighting. Rather than guess, we visit, listen to what you want, and price each part separately so you can see where the money goes and decide what to keep or leave out.
How long does a garden renovation take?
A simple re-turf and patio can take a week. A full rebuild with new levels, walls, paving and lawns usually takes three to six weeks. We give you start and finish dates with the quote and keep you updated as we go.
Do you design the garden too?
We plan the layout with you at the site visit, talking through levels, materials and how you want to use the space. If you already have a plan from a garden designer, we can build from that.
Turf or artificial grass?
Real turf costs less to lay and stays cooler underfoot, but needs mowing and watering. Artificial grass costs more up front and needs very little upkeep, which suits shady gardens, dogs and families who want a green lawn all year. We lay both on a properly prepared base.
Can you work around existing trees and features?
Yes. We often build round mature trees, existing walls or outbuildings. Decks can be cut round a trunk and paving stepped round roots without damaging them.
Do you take the waste away?
Yes. Green waste, old paving, soil and rubble are taken away, and the cost is shown on the quote.
