Local know-how

Chalk hills and river valleys

Salisbury sits where several rivers meet, with chalk hills around them. Up on the chalk the ground is firm and drains well. Down near the rivers, in places like Harnham and Bemerton, the ground can be softer and the water table higher, so we test the ground before choosing the build-up.

Planning and permissions in Salisbury

Wiltshire Council handles planning. Central Salisbury and the Cathedral Close are a large conservation area, and several nearby villages have their own. For front driveways and walls there, we check the rules before we price.

The national rules are in our driveway planning permission guide, and typical prices are in the driveway cost guide.

Homes in Salisbury

Old city houses and new estates

The city has medieval and Georgian houses in the centre, Victorian terraces around it, and newer estates at Old Sarum and Laverstock. Long rural drives in the villages often suit gravel with a block paving apron at the lane.

Not sure what would suit your house? Book a free site visit and we will talk it through on the spot.

FAQs

Salisbury questions answered

Is the ground near the river a problem for a driveway?
It can be softer and wetter, so we test it at the visit and may dig deeper or use a membrane and a thicker sub-base. We tell you why if your drive needs more base work.
Which parts of Salisbury do you cover?
The whole city and the villages around it, SP1 and SP2, including Harnham, Bemerton, Laverstock, Old Sarum, Stratford-sub-Castle, Wilton and Alderbury.
What suits a long country drive?
Gravel over a stabilising grid is the most affordable, with a block paving apron where it meets the lane to stop stones spreading. Resin bound gives the same look with no loose stones.
