Local know-how

South Wiltshire chalk and older houses

Most of south Wiltshire is chalk downland, from Salisbury Plain round to the valleys of the Wylye, Nadder and Avon. It drains well and makes a firm base. Valley-bottom plots near the rivers can be softer and wetter, so we check the ground at the survey rather than assume.

Many houses here are older, in brick, flint or stone, with long drives and gates. Gravel with a block paving apron, or resin bound in a warm buff or gold blend, tends to suit them better than plain grey paving.

Planning in south Wiltshire

Wiltshire Council handles planning across the county. Salisbury has a large conservation area around the city centre and the Cathedral Close, and many villages have their own, so front driveways and walls there may need extra checks. We look into it before quoting. Our planning permission guide explains the national rules.

FAQs

Questions about working in South Wiltshire

Do you cover all of Wiltshire?
We cover the south of the county: Salisbury, Wilton, Amesbury, Downton, Mere, Tisbury, Warminster and the villages around them. North Wiltshire, around Swindon and Chippenham, is outside our area.
What driveway suits an older house in Wiltshire?
Gravel over a stabilising grid, or resin bound in a warm stone blend, usually looks right on brick, flint and stone houses. A block paving apron at the road keeps gravel off the lane.
Do I need permission for a new drive in a conservation area?
Possibly. Permitted development rights are tighter in conservation areas, and some have Article 4 directions that remove them. We check with Wiltshire Council’s guidance for your street before we price the job.

We also cover Dorset, Hampshire and West Sussex.
