Artificial grass in Chichester

On the clay and brickearth around Chichester, artificial grass needs a drained base. We put one in so it doesn't turn into a puddle in winter.

Local know-how

Flat coastal plain and a high water table

Chichester sits on the coastal plain, on clay and brickearth, and in parts of the city and towards the harbour the water table is high in winter. Water sits on the surface instead of soaking away.

So we lean towards permeable surfaces, set careful falls, and add channel drains to soakaways where the ground cannot cope. It is the difference between a patio you can use in January and one that turns into a pond.

Homes in Chichester

City houses and harbour villages

Inside the city there are Georgian and Victorian houses with walled gardens. Summersdale and Parklands have larger family homes, and Bosham, Fishbourne and the Witterings have coastal plots where salt-tolerant materials and planting make sense.

Not sure what would suit your house? Book a free site visit and we will talk it through on the spot.

Planning and permissions in Chichester

Chichester District Council handles planning across most of the area. The city centre is a conservation area, Chichester Harbour is a protected landscape, and the South Downs National Park starts just north, with its own planning authority. We check which applies before designing.

The national rules are in our driveway planning permission guide, and typical prices are in the driveway cost guide.

FAQs

Chichester questions answered

Will my new patio drain on Chichester’s wet ground?
Yes, if it is planned for. We set falls away from the house and add a channel drain or soakaway where the ground holds water.
Do you cover the Witterings and Bosham?
Yes, along with Fishbourne, Lavant, Tangmere, Selsey and the rest of the area around the city.
Who handles planning near Chichester Harbour?
Chichester District Council for most of it, with extra protection around the harbour. North of the city, inside the South Downs National Park, the park authority decides.
