Building on Hampshire chalk, clay and forest gravels
North and central Hampshire, around Winchester, Andover and Basingstoke, sits on chalk. It gives a firm, free-draining base, though flint bands slow the dig and the spoil volume is high, so muck away is a real line on those quotes.
Down towards Southampton, Fareham and Portsmouth there is more clay and river gravel. Clay holds water after rain, so non-permeable drives need proper falls to a drain or soakaway, and sub-bases go deeper. On the edge of the New Forest the ground is sandy and gravelly, which drains well.
Planning in Hampshire and the New Forest
Planning is handled by the district or city council: for example Winchester City Council, Test Valley for Andover and Romsey, Basingstoke and Deane, New Forest District Council, or Southampton and Portsmouth city councils. Inside the New Forest National Park, the National Park Authority deals with planning instead, and it is stricter about hard surfacing and boundary changes. We check which applies before pricing. Our planning permission guide explains the national rules.
