Local know-how

Coastal plain, Downs and Weald clay

Along the coast, from Chichester through Bognor Regis to Worthing, the ground is mostly flat coastal plain on clay and brickearth, with a high water table in places. Surface water is the main thing to plan for, so we set falls carefully and favour permeable surfaces or proper soakaways.

Inland, the South Downs are chalk, and further north, around Horsham and Crawley, the Weald is heavy clay that shrinks in dry summers and swells in winter. On Weald clay we dig deeper, use a membrane and keep new paving clear of tree roots.

Planning in West Sussex and the South Downs

Planning is dealt with by the district councils: Chichester, Arun, Worthing, Horsham and others. Inside the South Downs National Park, which takes in Midhurst and Petworth, the National Park Authority makes the decisions. Chichester and Arundel also have large conservation areas. We check which applies to your house first. Our planning permission guide explains the national rules.

FAQs

Questions about working in West Sussex

Do you really cover West Sussex from Dorset?
Yes. West Sussex is part of our working area, from Chichester across to Worthing and Horsham. Ring us with your postcode and we will tell you when we could fit you in.
What is the best driveway for flat coastal ground with poor drainage?
A permeable surface such as resin bound, permeable block paving or gravel, laid on a sub-base designed to hold water and let it soak away slowly. Where the ground is very wet, we add a channel drain to a soakaway.
Do you work inside the South Downs National Park?
Yes, including around Midhurst and Petworth. Planning there goes through the South Downs National Park Authority, which has its own guidance on driveways and boundaries, so we check it before we start.

We also cover Dorset, Hampshire and South Wiltshire.
