Porcelain terraces and sandstone patios, often stepped down a slope with new walls.

Artificial grass on the terraces of sloping Parkstone and Lilliput gardens, where mowing a steep bank is no fun.

On sloping Poole plots the retaining walls do most of the work: each terrace held by a wall with drainage behind it, and steps between.

Rooms and pool houses for the bigger harbour-side plots, tied into decks, glass balustrades and porcelain terraces.
More on garden roomsBroadstone, Oakdale and Creekmoor have lots of post-war and 1970s houses with wide frontages, ideal for a full-width drive. Around the harbour, Lilliput, Canford Cliffs and Sandbanks, plots are bigger and jobs tend to be complete garden rebuilds with porcelain, glass and lighting.

Poole is hilly in a way that catches people out. Plenty of gardens in Parkstone, Lilliput and Canford Cliffs fall steeply away from the house, so a usable garden often means terraces held up by retaining walls, with steps and drainage behind each level.
The ground is mostly free-draining sand, like Bournemouth. That makes permeable driveways easy to justify, but it means footings and edging need to be properly set, because loose sand gives way under load.

Poole is also covered by BCP Council, which handles planning and dropped kerbs. Large walls next to the road, and anything in a conservation area, may need permission. We check before we draw anything up.
The national rules are in our driveway planning permission guide, and typical prices are in the driveway cost guide.
